Do you get frustrated like me by peoples difficulty to move from planning to implementation? It seems that despite the industries created by time management and project management philosophies work is still not being delivered. Quite simply, people are not delivering on promises. What is the answer?

    1. Matching resources to a project brief is relativly easy when the brief is clear, fixed and contains no unknowns. The reality is that on all but the simplest projects change is inevitable as ‘unknowns’ become known scope will change. For larger projects the impact of environmental factors such as the economic, market, policy and political context can necessitate a major shift in scope and therefore a change in resources (including time).

It’s important that project partners understand that in the real world abstract programmes need to build in mechanisms to deal with change and risk.

All this is straight forward project management. Before you can manage a project you have to win it. Both clients and consultants with interests in securing a future for a particular project can often join in shared over optimism regarding resources.

    2. If you want to “Just do it” then you must ditch your “To Do” List!

Do you struggle to keep your list of actions to one page ? Do you find that you’ve 23 items and some days all you seem to do is add yet more stuff ? Well, here’s my recent discovery. Just bin that ever-lasting list ! Really, if you have an important task, just give it a slot into your schedule in the same way you put a meeting in your diary. Allow enough time to nail the task. Simple. Now just take a view of your week and make appointments with yourself to tackle the most important tasks. Pretty soon you’ll find that you are blitzing your actions. Try it for a week. Let me know if it works for you ? Or - do you have an even better top tip that you could share ?
